Diver's attendant

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Diver's attendant is a professional role in commercial diving, underwater work, and recreational diving. The attendant, also known as a standby diver, is responsible for assisting the primary diver before, during, and after the dive. This includes ensuring the diver's safety, monitoring the diver's progress, and providing assistance in case of emergencies.

Roles and Responsibilities[edit | edit source]

The diver's attendant has several key responsibilities. These include:

  • Pre-dive preparation: The attendant helps the diver to don their diving suit and diving equipment, checks the equipment for functionality, and ensures that the diver is physically and mentally prepared for the dive.
  • Communication: During the dive, the attendant maintains constant communication with the diver through underwater communication systems. They relay information between the diver and the surface team, and monitor the diver's progress and wellbeing.
  • Emergency response: In case of emergencies, the diver's attendant is trained to provide immediate assistance. This can include rescuing the diver, providing first aid, or calling for additional help.
  • Post-dive assistance: After the dive, the attendant helps the diver to remove their equipment, checks for any signs of decompression sickness, and ensures that the diver is in good health.

Training and Qualifications[edit | edit source]

To become a diver's attendant, individuals must undergo specific training. This typically includes a basic diving certification, as well as additional training in emergency response, first aid, and underwater communication. Some roles may also require a professional diving certification, such as a Commercial Diving License.
