Ductus deferens

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Ductus Deferens is a part of the male reproductive system that plays a crucial role in the transportation of sperm. It is also known as the vas deferens.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The ductus deferens, or vas deferens, is a muscular tube that starts from the epididymis in the testicle to the urethra. The ductus deferens is approximately 30 centimeters long in humans. It is a part of the male reproductive system and its primary function is to transport mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation.

Function[edit | edit source]

The ductus deferens transports mature sperm from the epididymis where they are stored to the urethra. The smooth muscle in the wall of the ductus deferens contracts in waves of peristalsis during ejaculation.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The ductus deferens is a significant structure in many procedures related to male fertility and contraception. A vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. During the procedure, the vasa deferentia are cut, tied, cauterized, or otherwise interrupted.
