Fluciclovine (18F)
What is Fluciclovine F18?[edit | edit source]
Fluciclovine F18 (Axumin) is a L-alpha-amino acid.
What are the uses of this Fluciclovine F18?[edit | edit source]
- Fluciclovine is indicated as a detection agent for positron emission tomography (PET) in men with suspected prostate cancer recurrence based on elevated blood prostate specific antigen (PSA) levels following prior treatment.
- The overexpression of L-type amino acid transporters such as LAT1 and LAT3 that mediate the uptake of essential amino acids has been extensively reported as a tumoral mechanism of cell growth.
How does this Fluciclovine F18 work?[edit | edit source]
- Following intravenous administration, the tumor-to-normal tissue contrast is highest between 2 and 10 minutes after injection, with a 63% reduction in mean tumor uptake at 90 minutes after injection.
- The scanning time point should be evaluated carefully as an early scanning can present an increased blood pool and a late scanning will translate into an increased muscle uptake.
- These variations should always be considered in the image interpretation.
- Fluciclovine F18 is a radiotracer containing a synthetic amino acid analogue of L-leucine radiolabeled with fluorine F 18 with potential diagnostic imaging use.
- Similar to most amino acids, fluciclovine F18 appears to enter cells through the energy-independent L-type amino acid transporter (LAT) system.
- As an amino acid analogue, this agent is preferentially accumulated by tumor cells due to their increased metabolic needs; however, unlike naturally occurring amino acids, this non-natural amino acid-analogue radiotracer is not metabolized. Accordingly, fluciclovine F18 accumulates in tumor cells and can potentially be used to image tumors using positron emission tomography (PET).
What is Fluciclovine (18F)?[edit | edit source]
It is an an over the counter (OTC) nasal decongestant.
What are the uses of Fluciclovine (18F)?[edit | edit source]
It is used in symptomatic relief from nasal congestion
How does Fluciclovine (18F) work?[edit | edit source]
It is a temporary symptomatic treatment for nasal congestion caused by conditions such as:
- A cold
- Hay fever
- Upper respiratory allergies
- Relieves symptoms of nasal discomfort caused by dryness and sinus pressure.
How should Fluciclovine (18F) be used?[edit | edit source]
- Place a small amount in each nostril and inhale well back into the nasal passages.
What are the dosage forms and brand names of Fluciclovine (18F)?[edit | edit source]
- Use appropriate radiation safety handling measures.
- Aseptically withdraw Axumin from its container and administer 370 MBq (10 mCi) as a bolus intravenous injection.
- Initiate imaging 3 minutes to 5 minutes after administration. Scanning should start from mid-thigh and proceed to base of skull, with a total scan time of approximately 20 minutes to 30 minutes.
- The (radiation absorbed) effective dose associated with 370 MBq (10 mCi) of injected activity of Axumin is approximately 8 mSv (0.8 rem) in an adult.
What side effects can Fluciclovine (18F) cause?[edit | edit source]
What special precautions should I follow?[edit | edit source]
- Image interpretation errors can occur with Axumin imaging.
- Radiation risk: Axumin contributes to a patient's long-term cumulative radiation exposure.
- Ensure safe handling to protect patients and health care workers from unintentional radiation exposure.
What to do in case of emergency/overdose?[edit | edit source]
- In case of overdose, call the poison control helpline of your country. In the United States, call 1-800-222-1222.
- Overdose related information is also available online at poisonhelp.org/help.
- In the event that the victim has collapsed, had a seizure, has trouble breathing, or can't be awakened, immediately call emergency services. In the United States, call 911.
Can Fluciclovine (18F) be used in pregnancy?[edit | edit source]
- It is not studied in pregnant women
Can Fluciclovine (18F) be used in children?[edit | edit source]
Not studied and hence safety and effectiveness have not been established in pediatric patients.
What should I know about storage and disposal of Fluciclovine (18F)?[edit | edit source]
- Store Axumin at controlled room temperature (USP) 20°C to 25°C (68°F to 77°F). Axumin does not contain a preservative. Store Axumin within the original container in radiation shielding. Do not use Axumin more than 10 hours after end of synthesis and dispose of in accordance with institutional guidelines.
- In the United Stats, this preparation is approved for use by persons under license by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission or the relevant regulatory authority of an Agreement State.
