From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Hallux Rigidus is a type of Arthritis that affects the joint at the base of the big toe. It is characterized by stiffness and limited range of motion in the big toe, which can make walking and other activities difficult.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Hallux Rigidus is caused by wear-and-tear Arthritis that damages the cartilage within the joint. This can occur as a result of age, injury, or an underlying condition such as Rheumatoid Arthritis or Gout.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The primary symptom of Hallux Rigidus is pain and stiffness in the big toe, particularly during movement. Other symptoms may include swelling, inflammation, and a bump on the top of the foot.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Hallux Rigidus typically involves a physical examination and imaging tests such as X-rays or MRIs. The doctor may also ask about the patient's medical history and symptoms.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for Hallux Rigidus may include non-surgical options such as medication, physical therapy, and shoe modifications. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove bone spurs or replace the damaged joint.
