Breakfast is the first meal of the day, typically consumed in the morning. The word derives from the idea of breaking the fasting period of the prior night. It has its origins in the Christian custom of fasting from food between the dinner meal and the morning meal. Breakfast foods vary widely from place to place, but often include a carbohydrate such as grains or cereals, fruit, vegetables, a protein food such as eggs, meat or fish, and a beverage such as tea, coffee, milk, or fruit juice.

Continental breakfast is a light meal typically consisting of pastries and baked goods, fruits, toast, and coffee. It is usually served in hotels and bed & breakfast accommodations.
American breakfast[edit | edit source]
An American breakfast often consists of eggs, some kind of meat like bacon or sausages, toast or biscuits, and hash browns or other form of potatoes. It may also include pancakes, waffles, or a type of cereal.
Asian breakfast[edit | edit source]
Asian breakfasts vary greatly depending on the country. In China, breakfast often consists of rice, noodles, breads, and dishes that are also eaten at other meals of the day. In Japan, a traditional breakfast is rice, fish, and miso soup.
