Ornithosis

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Ornithosis, also known as Psittacosis or Parrot Fever, is a zoonotic infectious disease caused by a type of bacteria called Chlamydia psittaci. The disease is primarily found in birds, but can also infect humans and other mammals.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

In birds, symptoms of ornithosis can vary greatly, but often include lethargy, loss of appetite, and respiratory distress. In humans, symptoms can range from mild flu-like symptoms to severe pneumonia.

Transmission[edit | edit source]

Ornithosis is primarily transmitted through inhalation of dust from dried droppings of infected birds. It can also be transmitted through bites or scratches from infected birds, or through handling the feathers or tissues of infected birds.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for ornithosis typically involves antibiotics, such as doxycycline or tetracycline. In severe cases, hospitalization may be required.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of ornithosis involves regular cleaning and disinfection of bird cages and aviaries, as well as avoiding close contact with sick birds.
