Physician titles
There are many different titles used for physicians, depending on their level of education, training, and area of specialization. Here are some of the most common physician titles:
- Medical student: A student who is currently enrolled in medical school and is pursuing a degree in medicine.
- Resident: A physician who has completed medical school and is currently training in a specific specialty under the supervision of attending physicians.
- Fellow: A physician who has completed residency training and is pursuing additional specialized training in a particular subspecialty.
- Attending Physician: A fully trained and licensed physician who has completed residency and/or fellowship training and is responsible for supervising residents and fellows, as well as providing direct patient care.
- General Practitioner (GP): A physician who provides primary care services to patients, including preventative care, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illnesses, and coordination of care with specialists as needed.
- Specialist: A physician who has completed additional training and education in a specific area of medicine, such as cardiology, gastroenterology, or oncology.
- Surgeon: A physician who specializes in surgical procedures and may perform surgeries to treat a variety of conditions.
- Medical Director: A physician who oversees the medical operations of a healthcare organization, such as a hospital or clinic.
- Chief Medical Officer (CMO): A physician who serves as the highest-ranking medical executive in a healthcare organization, responsible for developing and implementing medical policies and strategies.
