Surat is a city located in the Indian state of Gujarat. It is the eighth largest city and ninth largest urban agglomeration in India. It is the administrative capital of the Surat district. The city is located 284 kilometres south of the state capital, Gandhinagar; 265 kilometres south of Ahmedabad; and 289 kilometres north of Mumbai. The city centre is located on the Tapti River, close to Arabian Sea.

Surat was a grand port city during the Mughal Empire. The city used to enjoy the direct patronage of the emperors. The city was first mentioned by the name Surat in the work, 'Skanda Purana'. The city was also described in the accounts of Marco Polo.

Economy[edit | edit source]

Surat is a major hub of diamond cutting and polishing. The Diamond industry in Surat is one of the largest in the world. The city is also known for its textile industry. It is the biggest centre of MMF (man-made fibre) in India. The Surat Art Silk Cloth Manufacturers Association is an association of textile processing units in Surat.

Surat is known for its distinctive Gujarati culture. The city is famous for its food, textile, and diamonds. Surat has a vibrant culture with a love for food. The city is famous for its 'Surti delicacies' like Ghari, Locho, Undhiyu, and Surati Khaman.

Education[edit | edit source]

Surat is home to several educational institutions, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology (SVNIT) and Surat International School.

Transport[edit | edit source]

Surat is well-connected by road, rail, and air. The city has a domestic airport, Surat International Airport, with direct flights to major Indian cities. The Surat Railway Station is also a busy junction on the Western Railway of the Indian Railways.
