Swedish Health Services

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Swedish Health Services is a nonprofit health care provider in the Seattle metropolitan area. It is the largest of its kind in the region and operates five hospital campuses, located in the neighborhoods of First Hill, Cherry Hill, and Ballard in Seattle, as well as in the cities of Edmonds and Issaquah. In addition to the hospitals, Swedish Health Services also has ambulatory care centers in Redmond and Mill Creek, as well as a network of over 100 primary-care and specialty clinics known as Swedish Medical Group. The organization is affiliated with various other health care providers across Washington state.

Swedish Health Services was founded in 1910 by Dr. Nils August Johanson, an immigrant from Sweden and the father-in-law of Seattle businessman Elmer Nordstrom. The medical center's name is a tribute to Dr. Johanson's heritage. In 1932, Swedish opened the first cancer-care center west of the Mississippi. The board of trustees for Swedish Hospital historically consisted of individuals of Swedish descent until the election of two non-Swedish-American doctors in 1968.

Over the years, Swedish Health Services expanded its network by merging with Seattle General Hospital, founded in 1895, and the Doctors Hospital, founded in 1944. Today, Swedish Health Services is affiliated with many other health care providers in the region and employs over 8,800 individuals, including more than 6,000 credentialed physicians.
