The University of Maryland Medical Center Midtown Campus (formerly Maryland General Hospital) is a teaching hospital located in downtown Baltimore, Maryland, United States. It was founded in 1881 by a group of local doctors for teaching purposes. The hospital has been affiliated with the University of Maryland Medical System since 1999 and has over 1,400 employees and 500 doctors specializing in 30 different fields.[2]

Originally known as the Baltimore Medical College, it became affiliated with the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1911. In 1965, an affiliation with the Baltimore Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital was established. The hospital became part of the University of Maryland Medical System in 1999.[3]

Maryland General opened its own nursing school in 1893, but it closed in January 1987 with the graduation of its last class. The Obstetrics Service at Maryland General was discontinued in June 2013 due to declining volumes, despite its reputation for outstanding clinical outcomes.

In 2013, the hospital was renamed "University of Maryland Medical Center, Midtown Campus". It was also recognized as one of Solucient's "100 most improved Hospitals". [when?]

On January 11, 2018, the hospital faced controversy when it was reported that a mentally distressed patient was left outside on the street, dressed only in a hospital gown, in freezing temperatures.[4]

Public transit[edit | edit source]

The medical center is accessible via the Baltimore Light Rail at the Mount Vernon station located at Howard and Centre Streets.
