University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center is a 300-bed regional medical center located in Towson, Maryland. It was formerly operated by Catholic Health Initiatives but was acquired by the University of Maryland Medical System on December 1, 2012. The hospital was renamed University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center as part of the acquisition. An agreement was made between the University of Maryland Medical System and the Archdiocese of Baltimore to continue the hospital's religious mission and Catholic traditions.

The history of the hospital dates back to 1864 when Catherine Eberhard donated three Baltimore rowhouses to the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia. Six years later, Saint Joseph German Hospital was incorporated with the approval of the state government. The hospital relocated to a larger facility in Baltimore in 1872 and then to Towson in 1965.

Prior to the acquisition, St. Joseph's faced financial challenges and a loss of long-time patients in their cardiology department due to the controversy surrounding former cardiologist Mark Midei, who lost his medical license following multiple lawsuits related to heart stents.

The University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center is a private not-for-profit healthcare institution and is part of the University of Maryland Medical System. It has 224 licensed acute care hospital beds and provides emergency services.
