Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]
Fried was born in Vienna, Austria, into a Jewish family. He left school at the age of 15 and began working in a bookshop. His early exposure to literature and ideas influenced his later work as a writer and peace activist.
Career[edit | edit source]
Fried moved to Berlin in 1883, where he founded a publishing house and began his career as a journalist. He became deeply involved in the peace movement and co-founded the Deutsche Friedensgesellschaft (German Peace Society) in 1892 with Bertha von Suttner, a fellow peace activist and author of Die Waffen nieder! ("Lay Down Your Arms!").
Fried was a prolific writer and editor, contributing to numerous publications and founding several journals dedicated to peace, including Die Friedenswarte ("The Peace Watch"). His writings emphasized the importance of international law and arbitration as means to resolve conflicts.
Nobel Peace Prize[edit | edit source]
In 1911, Fried was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize alongside Tobias Asser for their efforts in promoting peace and international arbitration. The Nobel Committee recognized Fried's work in advocating for a peaceful resolution to conflicts and his influence in the peace movement.
Later Life and Legacy[edit | edit source]
During World War I, Fried continued to advocate for peace, although his efforts were met with resistance. He spent much of the war in Switzerland, where he continued his work as a writer and activist.
Fried's legacy is marked by his unwavering commitment to peace and his belief in the power of dialogue and negotiation. His work laid the foundation for future peace movements and international organizations dedicated to conflict resolution.
