He is a prominent figure in the study of fungal infections and has made significant contributions to understanding the mechanisms of pathogenesis and the immune response to pathogens.

Early Life and Education[edit | edit source]

Arturo Casadevall was born in Cuba and later moved to the United States. He earned his B.A. degree in Biochemistry from Queens College and his M.D. and Ph.D. degrees from the New York University School of Medicine.

Career[edit | edit source]

Casadevall began his career as a faculty member at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, where he served in various capacities, including as the Chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He later joined the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health as a professor and Chair of the Department of Molecular Microbiology and Immunology.

Research Contributions[edit | edit source]

Arturo Casadevall's research has focused on the pathogenesis of Cryptococcus neoformans, a fungus that causes cryptococcosis, particularly in immunocompromised individuals. His work has elucidated the role of capsular polysaccharides in virulence and the immune evasion strategies employed by Cryptococcus neoformans.

He has also contributed to the understanding of antibody-mediated immunity and the development of therapeutic antibodies for the treatment of infectious diseases. Casadevall has been a vocal advocate for the importance of scientific reproducibility and has worked to improve the standards of scientific research.
