CIA Kennedy assassination conspiracy theory
Template:Infobox conspiracy theory
The CIA Kennedy Assassination Conspiracy Theory posits that the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) was involved in the assassination of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States, on November 22, 1963. This theory suggests that elements within the CIA orchestrated or facilitated the assassination, either acting alone or in conjunction with other parties.
Background[edit | edit source]
John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dealey Plaza, Dallas, Texas, while riding in a motorcade. The official investigation, known as the Warren Commission, concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone in killing Kennedy. However, this conclusion has been the subject of much debate and skepticism.
Theories and Allegations[edit | edit source]
Proponents of the CIA conspiracy theory argue that the agency had several motives for wanting Kennedy dead, including:
- Bay of Pigs Invasion: Kennedy's perceived failure to support the CIA-led Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, which aimed to overthrow Fidel Castro in Cuba.
- Vietnam War: Kennedy's alleged plans to withdraw U.S. troops from Vietnam, which conflicted with the CIA's interests.
- CIA Reforms: Kennedy's purported desire to reform or dismantle the CIA following the Bay of Pigs fiasco.
Key Figures[edit | edit source]
Several individuals are often mentioned in connection with the CIA conspiracy theory:
- Allen Dulles: Former Director of the CIA, who was dismissed by Kennedy after the Bay of Pigs.
- E. Howard Hunt: A CIA officer allegedly involved in covert operations against Castro.
- David Atlee Phillips: A CIA officer who some claim had connections to Oswald.
Criticism and Debunking[edit | edit source]
Critics of the CIA conspiracy theory argue that there is no credible evidence linking the agency to the assassination. The House Select Committee on Assassinations (HSCA) concluded in 1979 that there was no evidence of CIA involvement, although it did suggest the possibility of a conspiracy involving other parties.
