- Pronounced kri - ko - trak - e - ot'-o - me
- Etiology: crico-; tracheotomy.
- Tracheotomy through the cricoid cartilage, usually done in an emergency, also called emergency tracheostomy.
- In cricothyrotomy, the incision or puncture is made through the cricothyroid membrane in between the thyroid cartilage and the cricoid cartilage
