Gestational trophoblastic tumor
Gestational trophoblastic tumor is a rare cancer that occurs in the cells that form during pregnancy. This type of tumor is often diagnosed early and has a high cure rate.
Types[edit | edit source]
There are several types of gestational trophoblastic tumors, including:
- Hydatidiform mole: This is the most common type of gestational trophoblastic tumor. It occurs when a fertilized egg doesn't develop into a fetus, but instead forms a mass of abnormal cells.
- Choriocarcinoma: This is a rare and aggressive type of gestational trophoblastic tumor that can spread to other parts of the body.
- Placental-site trophoblastic tumor: This is a very rare type of gestational trophoblastic tumor that forms in the part of the uterus where the placenta was attached.
- Epithelioid trophoblastic tumor: This is another very rare type of gestational trophoblastic tumor.
Symptoms[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of gestational trophoblastic tumor can vary depending on the type of tumor and its location. Common symptoms may include:
- Vaginal bleeding not related to menstruation
- Abdominal pain
- Nausea and vomiting
- Shortness of breath
Diagnosis[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of gestational trophoblastic tumor often involves a combination of physical examination, blood tests, ultrasound, and biopsy.
Treatment[edit | edit source]
Treatment for gestational trophoblastic tumor depends on the type of tumor, its location, and whether it has spread to other parts of the body. Treatment options may include:
- Surgery: This is often the first line of treatment for gestational trophoblastic tumors.
- Chemotherapy: This is often used if the tumor has spread to other parts of the body.
- Radiation therapy: This may be used in some cases, particularly if the tumor is resistant to chemotherapy.
Prognosis[edit | edit source]
The prognosis for gestational trophoblastic tumor is generally good, particularly if the tumor is diagnosed early and treated promptly.
