Golders Green

Golders Green is an area in the London Borough of Barnet in England. It is located approximately 5.5 miles (8.9 km) northwest of Charing Cross. The area is particularly known for its substantial Jewish population.

History

Golders Green was originally a small hamlet in the parish of Hendon, situated on the North End Road (now Golders Green Road). The name 'Golders' comes from a family named Godyere who lived in the area, and 'Green' alludes to the manorial waste on which the settlement was built.

Demographics

Golders Green is known for its rich cultural diversity. The area has a significant Jewish community, and is also home to a number of other ethnic groups, including those of Asian and Eastern European descent.

Landmarks

One of the most notable landmarks in Golders Green is the Golders Green Hippodrome, an entertainment venue built in 1913. Another significant landmark is the Golders Green Crematorium, which is considered the first crematorium in London.
