From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Langhe DOC is a Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) recognized wine region located in the northern Italian region of Piedmont. The region is renowned for its diverse range of high-quality wines, including red, white, and sparkling wines.

Geography[edit | edit source]

The Langhe region is situated in the southern part of Piedmont, between the Tanaro River and the Ligurian Apennines. The area is characterized by rolling hills, which are perfect for vine cultivation. The region's climate is continental, with cold winters and hot summers, which is ideal for grape growing.

Wine Production[edit | edit source]

Langhe DOC wines are produced from a variety of grape varieties. The most common red grape varieties include Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto, while the most common white grape varieties include Chardonnay, Moscato, and Arneis. The region is particularly famous for its Nebbiolo-based wines, which include Barolo and Barbaresco, two of Italy's most prestigious wines.

Wine Styles[edit | edit source]

Langhe DOC wines can be produced in a range of styles, from light and fruity to full-bodied and complex. The region's red wines are known for their deep color, high tannin content, and potential for aging. The white wines, on the other hand, are typically fresh and aromatic, with a good balance of acidity and fruitiness.

Viticulture[edit | edit source]

Viticulture in the Langhe region dates back to ancient times, with the first documented evidence of wine production dating back to the 5th century BC. Today, the region is home to a number of prestigious wineries, many of which have been family-owned for generations.

Recognition[edit | edit source]

The Langhe DOC was officially recognized as a Denominazione di Origine Controllata in 1994. This designation guarantees the quality and authenticity of the wines produced in the region, and ensures that they are made according to traditional methods.
