Liver Function Tests

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Blood tests that measure the levels of liver enzymes (proteins made and used by the liver) to determine if the liver is working properly.

What is measured?[edit | edit source]

The liver enzymes that are routinely measured as part of liver function tests are aspartate aminotransferase (AST) – also called serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) – also called serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT), and gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT).

Elevated LFT's[edit | edit source]

Increased levels of these enzymes indicate that the liver has been damaged.
