Lymphocytic leukemia

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Lymphocytic leukemia is a type of cancer that affects the white blood cells known as lymphocytes. It is characterized by the overproduction of abnormal lymphocytes, which can interfere with the body's ability to fight off infection.

Types[edit | edit source]

There are two main types of lymphocytic leukemia: Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL). CLL progresses slowly and is most common in adults over the age of 55, while ALL is more aggressive and is the most common type of leukemia in children.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of lymphocytic leukemia can vary depending on the type and stage of the disease. They may include fatigue, fever, weight loss, night sweats, and frequent infections.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of lymphocytic leukemia is unknown. However, it is believed to be caused by a combination of genetic and environmental factors.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of lymphocytic leukemia typically involves a blood test to check for high levels of lymphocytes. Other tests may include a bone marrow biopsy and genetic testing.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for lymphocytic leukemia depends on the type and stage of the disease. It may include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, stem cell transplant, or targeted therapy.
