MacOS10.1

Mac OS X 10.0, code-named Cheetah, is the first major release of macOS, Apple Inc.'s desktop and server operating system. It was released on March 24, 2001, for a price of $129. Mac OS X 10.0 was a significant departure from the Mac OS 9 operating system, introducing a new Aqua user interface and a Unix-based foundation.

Development[edit | edit source]

The development of Mac OS X 10.0 began after Apple acquired NeXT in 1997, which brought Steve Jobs back to the company. The operating system is based on the NeXTSTEP operating system, which was developed by NeXT. The new OS aimed to combine the stability and security of Unix with the ease of use of the classic Mac OS.

Features[edit | edit source]

Mac OS X 10.0 introduced several new features and technologies, including:

  • Aqua: A new user interface with a focus on visual appeal, featuring translucent elements, drop shadows, and a new color scheme.
  • Dock: A new way to launch and manage applications, replacing the Apple Menu and Application Switcher.
  • Finder: A redesigned file management system with new features like Column view.
  • Terminal: Access to the Unix underpinnings of the operating system.
  • Quartz: A new graphics engine that provides advanced 2D graphics rendering.
  • OpenGL: Integrated support for 3D graphics.
  • Darwin: The Unix-based core of the operating system, providing a stable and secure foundation.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Mac OS X 10.0 received mixed reviews upon its release. While the new features and interface were praised, the operating system was criticized for its performance issues and lack of compatibility with some older Mac applications. Apple addressed many of these concerns in subsequent updates, particularly with the release of Mac OS X 10.1.

Legacy[edit | edit source]

Mac OS X 10.0 laid the groundwork for future versions of macOS, establishing a new direction for Apple's operating systems. The transition to a Unix-based system and the introduction of the Aqua interface were significant milestones in the evolution of macOS.
