Apple Podcasts is a digital media player application developed by Apple Inc. It is used for playing podcasts, both video and audio, on iOS devices and computers. The application was first released in 2005 as a part of iTunes and later became a standalone app in 2012 with the release of iOS 6.

History[edit | edit source]

Apple Podcasts was first introduced to the public on June 28, 2005, as a part of iTunes 4.9. The introduction of the podcast functionality in iTunes was a significant step in the popularization of the podcast medium. In 2012, with the release of iOS 6, Apple Podcasts was separated from iTunes and became a standalone app.

Features[edit | edit source]

Apple Podcasts allows users to subscribe to podcasts, download episodes for offline listening, and create custom playlists. The app also includes a discovery feature, which recommends new podcasts based on the user's listening history. In addition, Apple Podcasts supports RSS feeds, allowing users to subscribe to podcasts not listed in the Apple Podcasts directory.

Reception[edit | edit source]

Since its release, Apple Podcasts has been a major player in the podcast industry. As of 2020, it is estimated that Apple Podcasts hosts over 1.5 million podcasts and over 34 million episodes in more than 100 languages. However, the app has also faced criticism for its user interface and lack of certain features compared to other podcast apps.
