Pediatric residency programs in the United States

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Physicians that diagnose, treat, and help prevent diseases and injuries in children are called pediatricians. There are many specialties in Pediatrics and general pediatricians may refer patients to specialists for further diagnosis or treatment, as needed. Training in the field of Pediatrics involves residency program after completion of medical school. Here is a list of residency programs by country.

In the United States, pediatric residency programs serve as the essential bridge between medical school and becoming a practicing pediatrician. These programs offer intensive training focused on the healthcare of infants, children, adolescents, and young adults. Upon completion of a pediatric residency program, physicians are eligible to sit for the American Board of Pediatrics certification exam.

Structure of Pediatric Residency Programs[edit | edit source]

Typically, a pediatric residency lasts three years and is composed of rotations in general pediatrics and subspecialties, including but not limited to:

Residents gain experience in outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, neonatal and pediatric intensive care units, emergency departments, and specialty clinics.

Accreditation[edit | edit source]

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) is responsible for the accreditation of post-MD medical training programs within the United States. Pediatric residency programs must adhere to the standards set by ACGME to achieve and maintain accredited status[1].
