Pityrosporum folliculitis

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Pityrosporum folliculitis is a skin condition that is characterized by inflammation and infection of the hair follicles by the yeast Pityrosporum, also known as Malassezia. This condition is often mistaken for acne due to the similar appearance of the lesions, which are small, monomorphic, itchy pustules located primarily on the chest, back, and shoulders.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The primary cause of Pityrosporum folliculitis is the overgrowth of the yeast Pityrosporum in the hair follicles. This yeast is a normal part of the skin flora, but certain factors can cause it to multiply excessively, leading to inflammation and infection. These factors include increased oil production, hormonal changes, excessive sweating, and immune suppression.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of Pityrosporum folliculitis is the presence of small, itchy pustules on the skin. These pustules are often located on the chest, back, and shoulders, but can also appear on the face and upper arms. Other symptoms may include redness, swelling, and a burning sensation.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of Pityrosporum folliculitis is often challenging due to its similarity to acne. However, certain features can help distinguish this condition from acne, such as the distribution of the lesions and the presence of itching. A definitive diagnosis can be made through a skin biopsy or culture, which can identify the presence of the Pityrosporum yeast.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of Pityrosporum folliculitis involves the use of antifungal medications to reduce the overgrowth of the yeast. These medications can be applied topically or taken orally, depending on the severity of the condition. In addition to antifungal treatment, it may also be helpful to avoid factors that can promote yeast overgrowth, such as excessive sweating and oil production.
