Protein-sparing modified fast

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Protein-sparing modified fast (PSMF) is a type of fasting regimen that is primarily designed for weight loss. It is a ketogenic diet that is high in protein, low in carbohydrates, and very low in fat. The diet aims to provide adequate protein to prevent muscle loss while severely restricting calories to promote fat loss.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The PSMF diet was first developed in the 1970s as a treatment for severe obesity. It is typically used in a clinical setting under medical supervision due to the potential for nutrient deficiencies and other health risks. However, it has also been adopted by some in the fitness and bodybuilding communities as a method of cutting body fat while preserving muscle mass.

The diet involves consuming lean protein sources, such as chicken, turkey, fish, and egg whites, along with non-starchy vegetables. All other food groups, including fats, carbohydrates, and fruits, are severely restricted or eliminated.

Mechanism[edit | edit source]

The PSMF diet works by putting the body into a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for energy instead of carbohydrates. This is achieved by severely restricting carbohydrate intake. At the same time, the high protein intake helps to preserve lean muscle mass. This is why the diet is referred to as "protein-sparing" - it aims to spare the body's protein stores while burning fat for energy.

Risks and Considerations[edit | edit source]

While the PSMF diet can lead to rapid weight loss, it is not without risks. The diet is very low in calories, which can lead to nutrient deficiencies if not properly managed. It can also lead to other health problems, such as gallstones, heart problems, and metabolic disorders, especially if followed for a long period of time.

Furthermore, the diet is very restrictive and can be difficult to adhere to. It requires careful planning and monitoring to ensure adequate nutrient intake and to avoid potential health risks.
