Sexual dysfunction
(Redirected from Sexual disorders)
Sexual dysfunction refers to a problem occurring during any phase of the sexual response cycle that prevents the individual or couple from experiencing satisfaction from the sexual activity. The sexual response cycle traditionally includes excitement, plateau, orgasm, and resolution. Desire and arousal are both part of the excitement phase of the sexual response.
Types of Sexual Dysfunction[edit | edit source]
Sexual dysfunction disorders are generally classified into four categories: sexual desire disorders, sexual arousal disorders, orgasm disorders, and sexual pain disorders.
Sexual Desire Disorders[edit | edit source]
Sexual desire disorders, also known as Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder, involve a lack or absence of sexual fantasies and desire for sexual activity. This is considered a sexual dysfunction if it causes marked distress or interpersonal difficulties.
Sexual Arousal Disorders[edit | edit source]
Sexual arousal disorders, also known as Erectile Dysfunction in men and Female Sexual Arousal Disorder in women, involve difficulty becoming physically aroused or excited during sexual activity.
Orgasm Disorders[edit | edit source]
Orgasm disorders, also known as Anorgasmia, involve a delay or absence of orgasm (climax).
Sexual Pain Disorders[edit | edit source]
Sexual pain disorders involve pain during intercourse. In women, this is known as Dyspareunia or Vaginismus.
Causes of Sexual Dysfunction[edit | edit source]
Sexual dysfunction can have a variety of causes or contributors including (but not limited to) physical illness, medical treatments, medications, psychiatric conditions, and the health and behavior of a sexual partner.
Treatment of Sexual Dysfunction[edit | edit source]
Treatment for sexual dysfunction depends on the cause of the problem. If the cause is physical, medical treatment is aimed at correcting the underlying physical problem. If the cause is psychological, counseling can help. Some types of sexual dysfunction can be corrected by treating the underlying physical or psychological problems. Other types may need medication or other treatments.
