    Skype is a telecommunications application that provides videotelephony, voice calls, and instant messaging services. It was first released in August 2003 and was created by a team of developers from Estonia. Skype allows users to communicate over the Internet by voice using a microphone, by video using a webcam, and by instant messaging. Skype also provides services such as file transfer, debit-based calls to landline and mobile telephones, and other features.

    Skype was founded in 2003 by Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. The software was developed by Estonians Ahti Heinla, Priit Kasesalu, and Jaan Tallinn. In 2005, Skype was acquired by eBay for $2.6 billion. In 2011, Microsoft acquired Skype for $8.5 billion, integrating it into their suite of products and services.
