Temsavir

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Temsavir is an antiviral drug that is currently under investigation for its potential use in the treatment of HIV infection. It is a prodrug of BMS-626529, which inhibits the entry of the virus into the host cell.

Mechanism of Action[edit | edit source]

Temsavir works by binding to the gp120 protein on the surface of the HIV virus. This prevents the virus from attaching to the CD4 receptor on the host cell, thereby blocking the virus from entering the cell and replicating.

Clinical Trials[edit | edit source]

Temsavir has been studied in Phase 2b clinical trials for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in treatment-experienced patients. The results of these trials have shown that temsavir, when used in combination with other antiretroviral drugs, can reduce the amount of HIV in the blood.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

As with all medications, temsavir can cause side effects. The most common side effects reported in clinical trials include headache, diarrhea, and nausea. Serious side effects are rare, but can include allergic reactions and liver problems.

Future Research[edit | edit source]

Further research is needed to determine the long-term safety and efficacy of temsavir. In addition, studies are needed to determine the optimal dosing regimen and to investigate potential drug-drug interactions.
