Breast disease
Breast disease refers to any condition that affects the breast tissue. These conditions can be noncancerous (benign) or cancerous (malignant).
Types of Breast Disease[edit | edit source]
There are several types of breast disease, including:
- Breast cancer: This is the most serious type of breast disease and can be life-threatening if not treated early. It occurs when cells in the breast begin to grow out of control and form a tumor.
- Fibrocystic breast disease: This is a common condition characterized by benign changes in the breast tissue. Symptoms can include breast pain, tenderness, and lumpiness.
- Mastitis: This is an infection of the breast tissue that results in breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. It can also cause flu-like symptoms.
- Breast cysts: These are fluid-filled sacs in the breast, which are usually benign. They can cause discomfort and may need to be drained.
- Intraductal papilloma: This is a small, benign tumor that forms in the milk ducts of the breast.
Symptoms of Breast Disease[edit | edit source]
Symptoms of breast disease can vary depending on the specific condition, but may include:
- A lump or thickening in the breast or underarm area
- Changes in the size or shape of the breast
- Dimpling or puckering of the skin on the breast
- Fluid, other than breast milk, from the nipple, especially if it's bloody
- Scaly, red, or swollen skin on the breast, nipple, or areola (the dark area of skin that is around the nipple)
Diagnosis of Breast Disease[edit | edit source]
Diagnosis of breast disease typically involves a combination of physical examination, mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy. The exact methods used will depend on the patient's symptoms and the suspected condition.
Treatment of Breast Disease[edit | edit source]
Treatment of breast disease depends on the specific condition and may include medication, surgery, radiation therapy, or chemotherapy. In some cases, no treatment may be necessary.
