Cardiac Notch of Stomach

The Cardiac Notch of Stomach (also known as the cardiac incisure or cardiac angle) is a notable feature of the stomach, an organ in the digestive system. It is located on the superior part of the stomach, near the junction with the esophagus.

Etymology[edit | edit source]

The term "cardiac" in the name refers to the heart, from the Greek word kardia. This is due to the proximity of the cardiac notch to the heart. The term "notch" refers to an indentation or recess, in this case, the indentation in the stomach near the esophagus.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The cardiac notch is located on the left superior portion of the stomach, near the junction with the esophagus. It is part of the cardia, the section of the stomach that surrounds the esophageal opening. The cardiac notch is one of the two notches in the stomach, the other being the angular notch, which is located on the lesser curvature of the stomach.

Function[edit | edit source]

The cardiac notch does not have a specific function separate from the rest of the stomach. However, its location near the esophagus and the heart makes it a significant landmark in the anatomy of the stomach.

Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]

The location of the cardiac notch is important in medical procedures involving the upper gastrointestinal tract. For example, in gastroscopy, a procedure used to examine the interior of the stomach, the cardiac notch serves as a landmark to guide the insertion of the endoscope.

Related Terms[edit | edit source]

  • Cardia: The section of the stomach that surrounds the esophageal opening.
  • Esophagus: The tube that connects the throat to the stomach.
  • Gastroscopy: A procedure used to examine the interior of the stomach.
  • Angular notch: Another notch located on the lesser curvature of the stomach.
