Constitution Week
Constitution Week[edit | edit source]
Constitution Week is an annual observance in the United States that celebrates the adoption of the United States Constitution and recognizes the importance of this foundational document in American history and governance. It is observed from September 17 to September 23 each year.
History[edit | edit source]
Constitution Week was officially established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1956, following a petition by the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). The DAR, a lineage-based membership organization of women, was instrumental in promoting the observance to encourage the study and education of the Constitution.
The week begins on September 17, which is known as Constitution Day. This date marks the anniversary of the signing of the Constitution in 1787 by the delegates of the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia.
Significance[edit | edit source]
Constitution Week serves as a reminder of the enduring principles of the Constitution, including the rule of law, the separation of powers, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens. It is a time for educational institutions, civic organizations, and individuals to engage in activities that promote a deeper understanding of the Constitution and its role in American democracy.
Activities[edit | edit source]
During Constitution Week, various activities are organized across the country, including:
- Educational programs and lectures about the Constitution and its history.
- Public readings of the Constitution.
- School activities and projects focused on constitutional themes.
- Displays and exhibits in libraries and museums.
- Naturalization ceremonies for new citizens.
Legal Requirements[edit | edit source]
In 2004, an amendment to the Omnibus Spending Bill required educational institutions receiving federal funds to hold an educational program on the Constitution on September 17 each year. This requirement aims to ensure that students gain a better understanding of the Constitution and its significance.
