Lumbosacral

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Lumbosacral refers to the lower part of the spine, specifically the lumbar spine and the sacral spine. The lumbar spine consists of five vertebrae, labeled L1 through L5, while the sacral spine is made up of five fused vertebrae, labeled S1 through S5. The lumbosacral region is where the lumbar spine meets the sacral spine.

Anatomy[edit | edit source]

The lumbar spine is the lower part of the spine, located between the thoracic spine and the sacral spine. It consists of five vertebrae, labeled L1 through L5. These vertebrae are the largest and strongest in the spine, designed to carry the body's weight and withstand forces from lifting and carrying.

The sacral spine is located below the lumbar spine and above the tailbone (coccyx). It consists of five fused vertebrae, labeled S1 through S5. The sacral spine forms the back wall of the pelvis and connects the spine to the lower body.

The lumbosacral joint is where the last lumbar vertebra (L5) meets the first sacral vertebra (S1). This joint plays a key role in transferring weight from the upper body to the lower body.

Clinical significance[edit | edit source]

Conditions that can affect the lumbosacral region include lumbosacral radiculopathy, lumbosacral plexopathy, and lumbosacral spondylolisthesis.

Lumbosacral radiculopathy is a condition in which nerve roots in the lumbosacral spine are compressed or irritated. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

Lumbosacral plexopathy is a condition in which the lumbosacral plexus, a network of nerves in the lower back, is damaged. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.

Lumbosacral spondylolisthesis is a condition in which one of the vertebrae in the lumbosacral spine slips forward over the vertebra below it. This can cause pain, numbness, or weakness in the lower back, buttocks, and legs.
