Houston is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Texas and the fourth most populous city in the United States, with a population of 2,099,451 according to the United States Census Bureau. It is the principal city of the Greater Houston metropolitan area, which is the fifth most populous metropolitan statistical area in the United States. Houston is known for its diverse culture, strong economy, and vibrant social scene. However, like many other major cities in the U.S., it also faces significant health challenges. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the adult obesity rate in Houston was 34.4% in 2017, which is higher than the national average.
