Thor is a fictional character appearing in American comic books published by Marvel Comics. The character, based on the Norse deity of the same name, is the Asgardian god of thunder and possesses the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the ability to fly and manipulate weather among his other superhuman attributes.
Publication history[edit | edit source]
Thor first appeared in Journey into Mystery #83 in August 1962 and was created by editor-plotter Stan Lee, scripter Larry Lieber, and penciller-plotter Jack Kirby. He has since starred in several ongoing series and limited series, and is a founding member of the superhero team the Avengers, appearing in each volume of that series.
Fictional character biography[edit | edit source]
Thor Odinson is the son of Odin, the All-Father of the Norse gods, and Gaea, the Elder Earth Goddess. Raised in the realm of Asgard, Thor is taught the ways of battle and honor. He wields the enchanted hammer Mjolnir, which grants him the power to control the weather, fly, and project energy blasts.
Early adventures[edit | edit source]
Thor's early adventures on Earth often involve his alter ego, Dr. Donald Blake, a human physician who discovers his true identity as the god of thunder. As Blake, Thor learns humility and compassion, which are essential traits for a hero.
The Avengers[edit | edit source]
Thor is a founding member of the Avengers, a team of superheroes assembled to protect the world from threats too great for any one hero to handle. His teammates include Iron Man, Hulk, Ant-Man, and Wasp.
Ragnarok and rebirth[edit | edit source]
Thor has faced numerous challenges, including Ragnarok, the prophesied end of the gods. Despite the destruction of Asgard, Thor has been reborn and continues to protect both his home realm and Earth.
Powers and abilities[edit | edit source]
Thor possesses superhuman strength, speed, endurance, and longevity. His enchanted hammer, Mjolnir, allows him to control the weather, fly, and project energy blasts. Thor can also travel between dimensions and manipulate electricity.
In other media[edit | edit source]
Thor has appeared in various media adaptations, including animated television series, films, and video games. He is portrayed by Chris Hemsworth in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with Thor (2011).
