Dyspnoea

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Dyspnoea (also known as shortness of breath or breathlessness) is a subjective experience of breathing discomfort that consists of qualitatively distinct sensations that vary in intensity.[1] The term dyspnoea is derived from the Greek words dys meaning difficult, and pnoia meaning breath.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Dyspnoea can be caused by a wide range of conditions, including heart disease, lung disease, anemia, and anxiety disorders. It can also be a symptom of serious conditions such as pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and lung cancer.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The main symptom of dyspnoea is a feeling of breathlessness. This can be accompanied by other symptoms such as chest pain, wheezing, coughing, and fatigue.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

The diagnosis of dyspnoea is based on a patient's medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic tests. These tests may include blood tests, chest X-ray, electrocardiogram (ECG), and pulmonary function tests.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

The treatment of dyspnoea depends on the underlying cause. It may involve medications, oxygen therapy, physical therapy, or in severe cases, surgery.
