Echocardiogram

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Echocardiogram is a diagnostic test that uses ultrasound waves to create an image of the heart muscle. It allows doctors to see the heart beating, and to visualize many of the structures of the heart.

Overview[edit | edit source]

An echocardiogram is a type of ultrasound test that uses high-pitched sound waves that are sent through a device called a transducer. The device picks up echoes of the sound waves as they bounce off the different parts of your heart. These echoes are turned into moving pictures of your heart that can be seen on a video screen.

Types of Echocardiograms[edit | edit source]

There are several types of echocardiograms, including:

  • Transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE): This is the most common type. Views of the heart are obtained by moving the transducer to different locations on your chest or abdominal wall.
  • Transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE): In this test, a probe is passed down the esophagus to provide more detailed images of your heart. This test is more invasive and requires sedation.
  • Stress echocardiogram: This is an echocardiogram that is performed while the person exercises.
  • Doppler echocardiogram: This test is used to look at how blood flows through the heart chambers, heart valves, and blood vessels.

Uses[edit | edit source]

Echocardiograms are used to:

  • Diagnose heart disease
  • Assess the size and shape of the heart
  • Evaluate the ability of your heart chambers to effectively pump blood
  • Detect heart defects

Risks[edit | edit source]

Echocardiograms are generally safe. They have no known risks and do not expose the body to radiation.

Preparation[edit | edit source]

No special preparations are necessary for a standard transthoracic echocardiogram. If you're having a transesophageal echocardiogram, your doctor will give you specific instructions to follow.

Procedure[edit | edit source]

During the procedure, a technician will apply a gel to your chest. The gel helps the sound waves to transmit properly. A transducer is then moved around your chest to record images of your heart.

Results[edit | edit source]

Your doctor will review the images and discuss the results with you at a later time.
