Intestinal

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Intestinal refers to anything related to the intestine, a part of the digestive system that includes the small intestine and the large intestine. The primary function of the intestine is to digest food and absorb nutrients into the bloodstream.

Anatomy of the Intestine[edit | edit source]

The intestine is divided into two main sections: the small intestine and the large intestine. The small intestine is further divided into three parts: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. The large intestine includes the cecum, colon, rectum, and anal canal.

Small Intestine[edit | edit source]

The small intestine is the part of the intestine where most of the digestion and absorption of food takes place. It is divided into three sections: the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.

Duodenum[edit | edit source]

The duodenum is the first part of the small intestine. It receives partially digested food from the stomach, and further breaks it down with the help of enzymes and hormones.

Jejunum[edit | edit source]

The jejunum is the middle part of the small intestine. It is responsible for the absorption of nutrients from the digested food.

Ileum[edit | edit source]

The ileum is the last part of the small intestine. It absorbs any remaining nutrients before passing the waste material to the large intestine.

Large Intestine[edit | edit source]

The large intestine is responsible for absorbing water from the remaining indigestible food matter, and transmitting the useless waste material from the body.

Cecum[edit | edit source]

The cecum is the first part of the large intestine. It receives the waste material from the ileum.

Colon[edit | edit source]

The colon is the largest part of the large intestine. It absorbs water and electrolytes from the waste material.

Rectum[edit | edit source]

The rectum is the final section of the large intestine. It stores feces until they can be expelled from the body.

Diseases of the Intestine[edit | edit source]

There are many diseases and conditions that can affect the intestine, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, celiac disease, and colon cancer.
