The Halal Guys was founded by Mohamed Abouelenein, Ahmed Elsaka, and Abdelbaset Elsayed. They started their business as a hot dog cart on the corner of 53rd Street and 6th Avenue in New York City. The cart quickly gained popularity among taxi drivers, and the founders decided to switch to serving halal food to cater to the large Muslim cab driver population.

In 2013, The Halal Guys started franchising their concept, leading to a rapid expansion across the United States and internationally. As of 2021, there are over 90 The Halal Guys locations worldwide.
