Undernutrition

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Undernutrition is a form of malnutrition where a person does not get enough food or the right type of food for good health and growth. This can lead to various health problems, including stunted growth, eye problems, diabetes and heart disease.

Causes[edit | edit source]

Undernutrition can be caused by a variety of factors, including poverty, food insecurity, and lack of education about proper nutrition. It can also be caused by diseases that make it difficult for the body to absorb nutrients, such as HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis.

Symptoms[edit | edit source]

Symptoms of undernutrition can vary depending on the severity of the condition. They can include fatigue, dizziness, weight loss, and a weakened immune system. In severe cases, undernutrition can lead to organ failure and death.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment for undernutrition typically involves increasing the intake of nutritious foods and treating any underlying health conditions that may be contributing to the problem. In severe cases, hospitalization may be necessary.

Prevention[edit | edit source]

Prevention of undernutrition involves ensuring access to nutritious food, providing education about proper nutrition, and addressing underlying social and economic factors that contribute to food insecurity.
