Washington was admitted to the Union on November 11, 1889, and initially had one at-large congressional district. As the population grew, the number of districts increased. The state was apportioned its current ten districts following the 2010 Census.

Redistricting[edit | edit source]

Redistricting in Washington is handled by the Washington State Redistricting Commission, which is a bipartisan body responsible for drawing the boundaries of the congressional and state legislative districts. The commission is composed of four voting members appointed by the legislative leaders of the two major parties, and a non-voting chair selected by the four members.
