Abruzzo DOC
Abruzzo DOC is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) wine designation for red, white, and rosé wines from the Abruzzo region of Italy. The Abruzzo DOC was established in 2010, replacing the previous Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC.
History[edit | edit source]
The Abruzzo region has a long history of wine production, dating back to the Roman Empire. The region's wine production was significantly improved in the 20th century with the introduction of modern viticultural techniques. The Abruzzo DOC was established in 2010, replacing the Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC, which had been in place since 1968.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
The Abruzzo region is located in central Italy, stretching from the heart of the Apennines to the Adriatic Sea. The region's diverse geography and climate contribute to the unique characteristics of Abruzzo DOC wines. The region's mountainous terrain provides a variety of microclimates, while the proximity to the sea moderates the climate, making it ideal for viticulture.
Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]
The primary grape variety used in Abruzzo DOC wines is Montepulciano, which is used to produce both red and rosé wines. White wines are typically made from Trebbiano grapes, although other white grape varieties such as Pecorino and Passerina are also permitted.
Wine Styles and Production[edit | edit source]
Abruzzo DOC wines are known for their robust character and distinctive flavors. Red and rosé wines are typically full-bodied and rich, with flavors of red fruit and spice. White wines are typically light and crisp, with flavors of citrus and floral notes. The wines are produced using traditional winemaking techniques, with an emphasis on preserving the unique characteristics of the region's grape varieties.
Food Pairing[edit | edit source]
Abruzzo DOC wines are versatile and can be paired with a variety of foods. Red wines are typically paired with hearty dishes such as pasta and meat, while white wines are often paired with seafood and poultry.
