Brinzolamide/timolol

From WikiMD's Food, Medicine & Wellness Encyclopedia

Brinzolamide/timolol is a combination medication used in the treatment of ocular hypertension and open-angle glaucoma. It contains two active ingredients: brinzolamide, a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, and timolol, a non-selective beta blocker.

Composition[edit | edit source]

The medication is composed of two active ingredients. Brinzolamide is a carbonic anhydrase inhibitor that works by decreasing the production of aqueous humor in the eye, thereby reducing intraocular pressure. Timolol is a non-selective beta blocker that also reduces intraocular pressure by reducing the production of aqueous humor.

Indications[edit | edit source]

Brinzolamide/timolol is indicated for the reduction of elevated intraocular pressure in patients with ocular hypertension or open-angle glaucoma who are insufficiently responsive to beta-blockers or carbonic anhydrase inhibitors.

Administration[edit | edit source]

The medication is administered topically to the eye in the form of eye drops. The usual dose is one drop in the affected eye(s) twice daily.

Side Effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of brinzolamide/timolol include blurred vision, eye irritation, and taste changes. Serious side effects may include allergic reactions, heart problems, and breathing difficulties.

Interactions[edit | edit source]

Brinzolamide/timolol can interact with other medications, including other eye drops and systemic medications. It is important to inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken to avoid potential interactions.

Contraindications[edit | edit source]

Brinzolamide/timolol is contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to any component of this product and in patients with bronchial asthma, severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, sinus bradycardia, second or third degree atrioventricular block, overt cardiac failure, or cardiogenic shock.
