Corse AOC
Corse AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) is a French wine designation that is part of the French wine regulatory system. The Corse AOC is specific to the island of Corsica, a region known for its unique viticulture and wine production.
History[edit | edit source]
The Corse AOC was established in 1973, as a recognition of the quality and distinctiveness of Corsican wines. The island's wine production history dates back to the ancient Greeks, who introduced vine cultivation to Corsica.
Geography and Climate[edit | edit source]
Corsica is located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of France and west of Italy. The island's climate is typically Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The mountainous terrain and the sea's influence create a variety of microclimates that affect the growth of the vines and the characteristics of the wines.
Grape Varieties[edit | edit source]
The Corse AOC allows for the use of several grape varieties. The most common red and rosé wine grapes are Nielluccio, Sciacarello, and Grenache, while the most common white wine grapes are Vermentino (also known as Rolle) and Ugni Blanc.
Wine Styles[edit | edit source]
Corse AOC wines can be red, white, or rosé. Red and rosé wines are often blends of several grape varieties, while white wines are typically made from Vermentino. The wines are known for their aromatic complexity, with notes of fruit, herbs, and spices.
Production and Regulation[edit | edit source]
The production of Corse AOC wines is regulated by the Institut National de l'Origine et de la Qualité (INAO), which sets rules regarding grape varieties, yields, winemaking practices, and labeling. Wines that meet these standards are allowed to use the Corse AOC designation on their labels.
