Enteric

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Enteric refers to anything related to the intestines. The term is used in medicine to denote conditions, diseases, or procedures associated with the intestines.

Overview[edit | edit source]

The digestive system is a complex system that includes the stomach, small intestine, and large intestine. The enteric system, or the intestinal system, plays a crucial role in this process. It is responsible for the digestion and absorption of nutrients from food, as well as the elimination of waste products.

Enteric System[edit | edit source]

The enteric system is often referred to as the "second brain" due to its extensive network of neurons and neurotransmitters. This system can function independently of the central nervous system, although they do communicate with each other.

Enteric Diseases[edit | edit source]

Enteric diseases are illnesses that affect the intestines. They can be caused by a variety of factors, including bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi. Some common enteric diseases include:

  • Gastroenteritis: Inflammation of the stomach and intestines, usually caused by a viral or bacterial infection.
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS): A chronic disorder that affects the large intestine and causes symptoms like cramping, abdominal pain, bloating, gas, and diarrhea or constipation.
  • Crohn's disease: A type of inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the gastrointestinal tract, but most commonly affects the end of the small intestine and the beginning of the large intestine.
  • Ulcerative colitis: Another type of inflammatory bowel disease that causes long-lasting inflammation and ulcers in the digestive tract, specifically in the innermost lining of the large intestine and rectum.

Enteric Procedures[edit | edit source]

There are several medical procedures that are performed on the intestines. These include:

  • Colonoscopy: A procedure used to examine the inside of the large intestine for signs of disease or other problems.
  • Endoscopy: A procedure used to examine the digestive tract using an endoscope, a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it.
  • Gastroenterostomy: A surgical procedure that creates a direct connection between the stomach and the small intestine.
