Friuli Isonzo
Friuli Isonzo is a Denominazione di origine controllata (DOC) located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of Italy. The region is known for its diverse range of wines, including both red and white varieties. The DOC was established in 1974 and covers a large area along the Isonzo river, from which it takes its name.
Geography[edit | edit source]
The Friuli Isonzo DOC is located in the eastern part of the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, bordering Slovenia. The area is characterized by its flat plains and the Isonzo river, which has a significant impact on the region's climate and soil composition. The river's alluvial deposits create a fertile soil that is ideal for viticulture.
Climate[edit | edit source]
The climate in the Friuli Isonzo DOC is classified as Mediterranean, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The region benefits from the moderating influence of the nearby Adriatic Sea, which helps to maintain a consistent temperature throughout the year. This, combined with the region's fertile soils, creates ideal conditions for grape growing.
Wine Production[edit | edit source]
The Friuli Isonzo DOC produces a wide range of wines, including both red and white varieties. The most common grape varieties grown in the region include Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, and Merlot. The region is also known for its production of Friulano, a local white grape variety that is often used to produce single-varietal wines.
Wine Styles[edit | edit source]
The wines of Friuli Isonzo DOC are known for their high quality and distinctive character. The white wines are typically fresh and aromatic, with a good balance of acidity and fruitiness. The red wines, on the other hand, are often full-bodied and rich, with a good tannic structure and complex flavors.
