Master diver

Master Diver is a term used in recreational scuba diving and military diving to denote a level of certification, experience, and training.

Recreational Scuba Diving[edit | edit source]

In recreational scuba diving, the term Master Diver is used by several training agencies, such as PADI, SSI, and NAUI, to denote a high level of certification.

PADI[edit | edit source]

In PADI, the Master Diver certification denotes a diver who has completed the Advanced Open Water Diver, Rescue Diver courses, and five PADI Specialty Diver courses. They must also have logged a minimum of 50 dives.

SSI[edit | edit source]

In SSI, the Master Diver rating is the highest non-leadership certification level. It requires the completion of four specialty courses and 50 logged dives.

NAUI[edit | edit source]

In NAUI, the Master Diver course is an advanced certification designed to further develop knowledge and skills, and prepare divers for leadership-level training.

Military Diving[edit | edit source]

In military diving, the term Master Diver refers to a senior diving rank and qualification, particularly in the United States Navy and British Royal Navy.

United States Navy[edit | edit source]

In the United States Navy, a Master Diver is a warfare rating and qualification given to members who are competent in underwater diving and salvage. They are the highest-ranking enlisted members in the Navy's diving community.

British Royal Navy[edit | edit source]

In the British Royal Navy, the Master Diver is a qualification given to members who have completed the Long Diving Course and have extensive experience and expertise in military diving operations.
