Paraurethral gland
Paraurethral Gland
The paraurethral gland or Skene's gland is a set of glands present in the female reproductive system. These glands are located around the urethra, near the anterior wall of the vagina.
Anatomy[edit | edit source]
The paraurethral glands are situated on the anterior wall of the vagina, around the lower end of the urethra. They drain into the urethra and near the urethral opening. These glands are surrounded by tissue, which includes the part of the clitoris that reaches up inside the vagina and swells with blood during sexual arousal.
Function[edit | edit source]
The paraurethral glands produce a fluid that helps lubricate the urethral opening and may also have antimicrobial properties to protect the urinary tract from infections. During sexual arousal, the paraurethral glands swell and produce a discharge, which is sometimes referred to as "female ejaculation".
Clinical Significance[edit | edit source]
Infections, known as paraurethral duct infection or Skene's duct cyst, can occur in the paraurethral glands. Symptoms of such infections may include pain during sex, a burning sensation during urination, and the presence of a lump near the vaginal opening. Treatment typically involves antibiotics, warm baths, and in some cases, surgical drainage.
