Sacral agenesis

From WikiMD's Wellness Encyclopedia

Sacral agenesis (also known as Caudal Regression Syndrome or Caudal Dysplasia Sequence) is a rare congenital disorder in which there is abnormal fetal development of the lower spine—the sacrum and the coccyx.

Signs and Symptoms[edit | edit source]

The symptoms of sacral agenesis are highly variable and range from minor anomalies to severe physical disabilities. These may include motor and sensory deficits, orthopedic deformities, urogenital disorders, and gastrointestinal problems.

Causes[edit | edit source]

The exact cause of sacral agenesis is unknown, but it is believed to be multifactorial, involving both genetic and environmental factors. Maternal diabetes is strongly associated with the condition.

Diagnosis[edit | edit source]

Diagnosis of sacral agenesis is typically made through ultrasound during pregnancy. Further imaging studies such as MRI or CT scan may be used to assess the extent of the condition.

Treatment[edit | edit source]

Treatment of sacral agenesis is symptomatic and supportive. This may include physical therapy, surgery, and management of associated conditions.

Prognosis[edit | edit source]

The prognosis for individuals with sacral agenesis varies depending on the severity of the condition. With appropriate treatment and management, many individuals can lead productive lives.
