Sphaeranthus indicus is a species of flowering plant in the Asteraceae family, commonly known as East Indian globe thistle or Gorakhmundi. It is native to India, Sri Lanka, and Australia, and is widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine.

Sphaeranthus indicus is an annual herb that grows up to 40-60 cm in height. The plant has a woody, hairy stem and the leaves are simple, opposite, and serrate. The flowers are purple or pink and are arranged in spherical heads.

Uses[edit | edit source]

In Ayurvedic medicine, Sphaeranthus indicus is used to treat a variety of ailments. The plant is known for its anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antifungal properties. It is also used in the treatment of diabetes, jaundice, leprosy, fever, and arthritis. The plant is also used in the treatment of mental disorders and is believed to improve memory and cognitive function.

Sphaeranthus indicus prefers a warm, humid climate and well-drained soil. It is usually propagated by seeds and can be grown in both full sun and partial shade.

Recent research has shown that Sphaeranthus indicus may have potential as a treatment for obesity and metabolic syndrome. Studies have also suggested that the plant may have anti-cancer properties.
