Valtrex

Valtrex (generic name: Valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug used in the management and treatment of infections caused by the herpes simplex virus and varicella zoster virus. It is a prodrug, being converted in the body to acyclovir.

Pharmacology[edit | edit source]

Valtrex is an L-valine ester of acyclovir. It is an antiviral medication that helps the body fight the infection. It works by slowing the growth and spread of the herpes virus so that the body can fight off the infection. Valtrex does not cure herpes, but it can lessen the symptoms of the infection.

Medical uses[edit | edit source]

Valtrex is used to treat infections caused by herpes viruses in adults and children. Illnesses caused by herpes viruses include genital herpes, cold sores, shingles, and chickenpox. It is also used to help prevent the spread of genital herpes infection, but it is not a cure for herpes infections and will not prevent the spread of infection to others.

Side effects[edit | edit source]

Common side effects of Valtrex include headache, nausea, stomach pain, vomiting, and dizziness. Serious side effects are rare and include mental/mood changes, trouble speaking, shaky/unsteady movements, signs of kidney problems.

Precautions[edit | edit source]

Before taking Valtrex, patients should inform their healthcare provider if they are allergic to it, or to acyclovir, or if they have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems.
